Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami will be honored with the Arjuna Award for his outstanding performance in the year 2023. He will receive this award on January 9. The country's President Draupadi Murmu will give him this award. Mohammed Shami had performed brilliantly in the ODI World Cup this year. He took the maximum of 24 wickets and played an important role in taking Team India to the finals. Due to his performance, he has been selected for the Arjuna Award. Here we are telling how was Shami's journey of becoming a star cricketer? After the World Cup, Shami himself revealed this in an interview.
Shami had said that he is from Amroha village, his father and elder brother used to play cricket. Both were fast bowlers. For this reason, Shami also started playing cricket and became a fast bowler. He didn't even realize when he got completely immersed in cricket. Shami started playing as a batsman with leather balls for Duke School. He has also done wicketkeeping in tennis ball cricket. However, fast bowling has always been his priority. He started playing cricket after seeing his elder brother. His elder brother was a good player, but due to appendicitis, he had to leave cricket. In such a situation, he pushed Shami forward. In a match for the school, his brother made Shami open the innings and Shami scored a century in 34-35 balls, even though he had no experience of playing with a leather ball before. Shami had scored 108 runs in this match.
After this, he continued playing cricket with the help of his elder brother and the passion of becoming a cricketer arose in him. Then he saw that the stadium was 30 kilometers away from home. His father refused to give him the car. In such a situation, traveling 60 kilometers daily by bus was a difficult task. Going to the stadium, he learned technical things for the first time and started training with the boys preparing for the army. At this time he did not even have money to go to the gym, he went to the gym for the first time while playing Ranji Trophy.
Left UP after elder brother insulted him
Shami told me in this conversation that he was not very disappointed when he was not selected for the UP Ranji team in the first year. He tried the second year also. 1600 boys had come for the trials and selection had to be done in three days. In such a situation, Shami's elder brother went to the chief selector and asked to give Shami a chance. The selector said that if you can move my chair then your brother will be selected. Shami's elder brother said I can also turn the chair upside down, but I don't want that, if I have the strength then do it. The selector replied that people with power have no business here. Shami's brother tore the form and said that now we will not try for UP.
After making up his mind to leave UP, Shami talked to his coach and his coach made arrangements for him to play in Tripura. However, Shami could not play for Tripura either. After wasting three years, his coach in Kolkata arranged a trial in a club. When he went for the trial, the pitch was cement and there was no space for Shami to complete his long run-up. When he told the coach that there was less space, the coach said that he would have to give trials in this field. He bowled 10 balls and dismissed the batsman 3-4 times. After this, when we went to eat, we got bread and gram (Ghughni). Shami was waiting for rice and vegetables, but he had to eat them only.
Shami had gone to Kolkata with Rs 2500 and his father's ATM card, but he did not even know how to use the card. On asking his fellow players, he got a room for Rs 700, but for two days the coach did not answer about his selection. On the third day, Shami told the coach that he had only one thousand rupees left. In such a situation, the club captain came to meet him and said that your selection was 99 percent certain, but the club owner will see. Only after this, you will be selected.
On the third day, Shami was told that you can play for us, but you will not be paid. Shami agreed to this because the club was making arrangements for his stay and food. His parents were not ready for this, but Shami had to play and agreed. He did not get a house to stay for four days and slept in a party place. After this, he got a house to live. When he got to play, he took 45 wickets in nine matches. After this, the manager gave him Rs 25,000 and also gave him a ticket to go home. Shami gave this money to his mother. Papa then returned this money to him. 16-year-old Shami brought a bat, ball, and shoes. After this, his life came back on track. The performance kept getting better and the money also kept increasing.
Regarding selection in the Indian team, Shami said that he was playing a club match and then the media people started gathering there. Then Shami asked why there was such a crowd. His friend said that he had been selected for the Indian team. Shami bowled four maiden overs in his first ODI match. After this, he did wonders in the Ranji Trophy also. Took nine wickets in his first Test and now he is included among the best bowlers in the world.
