Speaking to NDTV, a BCCI source indicated that Shami's performance in domestic cricket is being closely monitored. According to the source, Shami is not out of the selection race, and his inclusion in the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand would not be surprising. The selectors believe that a bowler of his caliber knows how to take wickets; the real concern is only his fitness.
Statistics That Keep the Discussion Alive
Shami's case hasn't been closed because his statistics consistently speak in his favor. In his recent six domestic matches, he has taken 17 wickets, including in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the current Ranji Trophy season, he has also proven that his edge is still sharp, taking 20 wickets in just four matches.
Fitness: The Biggest Hurdle
The biggest obstacle in Shami's path has always been fitness. Since the 2023 World Cup, he has struggled with recurring ankle and knee injuries. Surgery and lengthy rehabilitation disrupted his consistency, making the selectors cautious.
