The 2026-27 Budget Session of Parliament began with an address by President Droupadi Murmu. Addressing a joint sitting of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the President clearly outlined the government's priorities, achievements, and future direction.

 

The speech, which began amidst protests from the opposition, focused on key issues such as social justice, the economy, space exploration, the development of Eastern India, and national security.

 

Budget Session to be held in two phases

The Budget Session is being held in two phases. The first phase will run from Wednesday to February 13, while the second phase will begin on March 9 and continue until April 2, during which a detailed discussion on the budget will take place. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju shared this information through a social media post.

 

In the first phase, the Economic Survey will be presented in Parliament on January 29.  Following this, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget on February 1 (Sunday). A total of 30 sittings are scheduled for the entire session.

 

The government's commitment to social justice

President Droupadi Murmu stated that the central government is fully committed to social justice.

 

She informed that approximately 950 million citizens of the country are currently benefiting from social security schemes.

 

According to her, nearly 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty in the last 10 years.

The President said that in the government's third term, special emphasis is being placed on further empowering the poor.

 

Along with this, corruption and scams have been curbed, ensuring the proper utilization of public funds.

 

India's historic journey in space

In her address, the President also highlighted India's achievements in the space sector. She said that astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's journey to the International Space Station (ISS) marks the beginning of a historic journey.

 

The President said that in the coming years, India is moving towards building its own space station. The country is working enthusiastically on the Gaganyaan mission, and space tourism now seems to be within the reach of Indians.

 

Special emphasis on the development of Eastern India

President Droupadi Murmu said that the government is giving special priority to the development of Eastern India. Several schemes are being implemented in this region to boost infrastructure, industry, and employment opportunities.

 

He indicated that addressing regional imbalances is a crucial part of the government's development policy to ensure equitable progress in every part of the country.

 

Focus on Economy, Reforms, and Employment

The President said that 150 Vande Bharat trains are currently operating in the country, symbolizing modern infrastructure. He stated that the proposed free trade agreement with the European Union will give new impetus to the service and manufacturing sectors and create employment opportunities for the youth.

 

He said that old rules are being amended keeping in mind future needs, and the government is moving forward on the path of 'Reform Express'.

 

The President said that the welfare of backward classes is a priority for the government, and women are being empowered through various welfare schemes. Referring to Operation Sindoor, he said that this campaign has showcased India's courage and resolve to the world.
