Nepotism, scams, unemployment... what other reasons fuelled violence in Nepal?

The Nepal government ordered all social media apps, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, to get registered, and after 1 week, all the apps were banned. Thousands of youth took to the streets against this ban. Nepal's Parliament was attacked. The police retaliated, resulting in 19 people dying and many being injured.

 

After seeing the pictures of violence coming from Nepal, there is only one question in everyone's mind: Is this uproar only for social media apps, or is there any other reason behind this demonstration of Gen-Z (people born between 1997 and 2012)?

 

Actually, the voice of corruption has been raised in Nepal for a long time. Last year, protests were seen in Nepal demanding the return of the monarchy. The Oli government has often been accused of corruption and scams, which has also started affecting social media. Let's know how?

 

1. Politics of nepotism

The Nepal government has been accused of nepotism. The luxurious lifestyle and splendor of the leaders, their children, and families were being exposed on social media. Meanwhile, the 'Nepo Baby' campaign also started trending on Nepal's social media, due to which the anger of the youth could be anticipated.

 

2. Black book of corruption

The Nepal government has been accused of many big scams and corruption in the last 4 years. Especially when the 3 big scams of the Nepal government were exposed, the anger of the youth reached the seventh sky.

 

3. Increasing unemployment among youth

The unemployment rate in Nepal is continuously increasing. Currently, 10.71 percent of Nepal's youth are unemployed. At the same time, Nepal's inflation rate is 5.2 percent. If the data is to be believed, only 20 percent of the people of Nepal have 56 percent of the country's wealth, which also includes Nepal's politicians.

 

4. Distance from India and increasing closeness to China

After the coming of KP Oli's government in July 2024, Nepal's inclination has started increasing towards China. Nepal fueled the issue of border dispute with India, due to which, economic pressure on Nepal also started increasing. Many Nepali citizens are also very angry about this attitude of the Oli government.

 

5. Demand for monarchy

Amidst the allegations of corruption in the Nepalese government, there is a demand to end democracy and re-establish the monarchy. In the last 5 years, governments have changed 3 times in Nepal. At the same time, after the current violence in Nepal, many leaders have started resigning, due to which speculations of a change of power are being made once again.
