Yesterday, the Defense Minister made a statement in Parliament on the Indo-China conflict in Ladakh. He started his conversation by remembering Lieutenant Colonel Santosh Babu and the 19 soldiers who lost their lives protecting the country with them. He narrated the entire controversy over border disputes between India and China on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). He mentioned all the agreements and treaties on the border between the two countries. It also mentioned how these agreements are being followed for a peaceful settlement on the border.
Disagreements on the borders that have been going on for centuries
When the defense minister talked about the borders, he also said that the questions related to the border of India and China are yet to be resolved. China does not accept traditional and centuries-old border-bound consent. We believe that these agreements are based on geographical criteria, which have also been confirmed by treaties and agreements and both countries have known this for centuries.
However, China believes that there is no formal line of borders between the two countries, just a traditional line, which both countries are describing according to their own in history and the existence of this line is the owner of both countries. There were several attempts to resolve this between 1950 and 60, but there was no consensus between the two countries.
China's occupation of Indian land
The Defense Minister said that 38000 sq km of Indian land is under the occupation of China, saying that he meant Aksai Chin. This area was annexed by China. It has strategic and geographical significance. The roads passing through and the water present here are invaluable to China.
The Defense Minister also said that 5000 square km of Indian land was handed over to China. His reference was to the 5180 km area of Shaksgam Valley in PoK, which Pakistan handed over to China in 1963. Shaksgam Valley is part of the same Pak-occupied Kashmir that Pakistan occupied. He has no right to surrender the occupied land to a third country.
The Defense Minister said that China also claims 90 thousand square kilometers in the North East. Assuming China's claim, the whole of Arunachal Pradesh belongs to him. It is important to mention that China shares its stake on Arunachal and calls it South Tibet.
China is a little unknown in solving LAC
The Defense Minister also told the House about the 1993 and 1996 agreements which stated that the two countries would keep their forces around the LAC to a minimum. It was also said in these agreements that questions related to the border are yet to be resolved and till then both the countries will respect the LAC. Not only this, both countries will take a middle path to decide LAC.
Perhaps this was the reason that between 1990 and 2003, both countries also worked for the strong survival of LAC, but after that China seemed to be unhappy about it. As a result, the perceptions of China and Indian LAC started to cross each other. Like the rest of the outskirts of this region, different agreements are applied in a precise manner. Then whether it is about the deployment and operation of the soldiers or what to do if there is a clash to maintain peace.
These are the circumstances of the war between the two countries
The Defense Minister spoke very openly about the protocol and agreements between the two countries. In the last decade, it is a time of examination, in those areas where both countries are standing face to face. But in the last few years, the skirmishes between these two countries are creating war-like situations. Be it Depsang and Chumar in 2013 and 2014 or 2017 in Dolam, the exercise of stopping China in Bhutan's interest.
This summer, all these exercises did not work to save the lives of their soldiers in Galvan on 15 June. However, not a single shot was fired in this accident. But after two months, the bullet was fired in Pangong but did not die. Some many accidents and actions are showing that agreements, treaties, and exercises are not working between the two countries.
To handle this, both the countries will have to work very seriously so that everything is resolved in peace. We saw that China is giving an appropriate statement in international talks, but their actions on the ground are defying their views.
The defense minister also referred to the military action that was taken this summer. Whether it is conflict, strategic maneuvers, and gathering troops in the territory of China. He assured Parliament that our preparations for the sovereignty of our country are also strong in countering China's troops.
Rajnath Singh also said that in his meeting with the Foreign Minister of China, he has made it clear that if he wants to settle his issue with China peacefully and wants China to work with us in the same way. He has even said that there should be no doubt about our resolve to protect the sovereignty and integrity of India. The same conversation has also taken place between the foreign ministers of the two countries.
His statement is confident for the country that we have resolved to negotiate peacefully. But, going to any extent to protect his border, he is ready for every possible action.
