The murder case of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj has reached the Supreme Court. The petition sought an inquiry under the supervision of a former apex court judge. The petition has sought an inquiry into all the 183 encounters that took place in Uttar Pradesh after 2017.

Petition filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari

In this petition filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, it has been said that an independent committee should be constituted to investigate the murder of Atiq and his brother. It has been said in the petition that these police encounters are dangerous for democracy as well as for the rule of law.

The Supreme Court had rejected the petition seeking Atiq's security

Nearly two weeks before mafia Atiq Ahmed was shot dead in Prayagraj on Saturday, the Supreme Court had dismissed a plea seeking his protection during the custody of the Uttar Pradesh police in the Umesh Pal murder case. In the petition, Atiq had asked for security stating that his life was in danger. It was said in the petition that he and his family have been falsely implicated in the Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj.

Uttar Pradesh government will take care of security

It may be known that on March 28, while rejecting Atiq's plea for security, the court had said that since he has been brought from Gujarat to Uttar Pradesh, there is no case left for hearing this petition in the apex court. The court had said that since he is in judicial custody, the Uttar Pradesh government will take care of his security.

A bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and Bela M Trivedi had said that he should file a petition in the Uttar Pradesh High Court for security or anything else.
