In the past few years, the region has witnessed some major earthquakes, such as the 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake (magnitude 8.6) and the 1897 Shillong earthquake (magnitude 8.1) - both among the strongest quakes in history.

This comes days after a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal, with tremors felt in Kolkata and many parts of West Bengal. The NCS said the quake struck at 6:10 am on February 25. An India Meteorological Department official told the media that the quake was recorded near Puri in Odisha.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 91 km in the Bay of Bengal, the official said. Though the tremors caused momentary panic among Kolkata residents, there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
