There has been a continuous protest by political parties and organizations against the Assam government's decision to merge the four districts into the original undivided districts. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the government does not require any support from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) regarding the redrawing of the state's district boundaries.
Chief Minister Sarma said, the Hojai district has been dissolved and will be created again in the future. There is no need for AIUDF and AAMSU to be involved in this. He had no role in the creation of the Hojai district and will have no role in anything in Assam in the future. I will visit Hojai and discuss with the people and we will re-form the district through the process.
Earlier on December 31, the state cabinet decided to merge the administrative districts of Hojai, Biswanath, Tamulpur, and Bajali with the original undivided districts of Nagaon, Sonitpur, Baksa and Barpeta, respectively.
Several political parties and organizations criticized the Assam government for its decision ahead of the Election Commission of India's delimitation process in the state.
Speaking about talks with the banned militant outfit ULFA-I, the Assam Chief Minister said that he is not asking ULFA-I chief Paresh Baruah to drop any demand as it is their organizational matter.
"As long as there is sovereignty, I cannot hold talks with them," Sarma said. The people of Assam have to find a way out for the government as well as the ULFA so that both the government and the ULFA can come out of the impasse. Because everyone wants the all-around development of Assam.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Chief Minister of Assam addressed a public meeting organized on Tiwa Raja Jongal Balhu Day near the memorial of the great warrior at Raha in Nagaon district.
Sarma said, to remember the great warrior and the overall contribution of the Tiwa community, the archaeological site here will be converted into the Jongal Balhu area. At Raha visit the historic Jongal Balhu Citadel and pay floral tributes to the statue of the great Tiwa King Jongal Balhu. The brave warriors who fought valiantly to protect their land and people will always remain an inspiration to the people of Assam. The Tiwa community has contributed immensely towards enriching the cultural mosaic of Assam. During this, he also performed Bhumi Pujan of Jongal Balhu Tourism Center in Nagaon district.
He also said that the Rs 50-crore project, to be funded by NABARD, would include a cycle track, EV track, hanging bridge, Chang Ghar, Deka Chang, amphitheater, and museum.
