Recently, the murder of two Spanish sisters of Pakistani origin Uruz Abbas (21 years old) and Anissa Abbas (23 years) made headlines in Pakistan. He was murdered by his in-laws in the Gujarat district of Punjab province. The only fault of the dead was that they had sought divorce from their husbands to get rid of the forced marriage.
In 2020, the family forcibly married both of them to their cousins during their trip to Pakistan. After marriage, both of them left their husband and went to Spain. Within two years, the husband was forcing the victims to sign the documents, paving the way for them to stay in Spain.
the husband was also involved in the murder
The victims were pressured by their families to return to Pakistan to sign the divorce document on May 19, 2022. They were tortured and eventually murdered by their husbands. All the 6 accused have been arrested. A Gujarat Police spokesperson said, "It was another incident of honor killing."
According to the data from the Pakistan Human Rights Commission, more than 450 such incidents were registered in 2021 alone. There were 15,222 murders in Pakistan between 2004 and 2016. That is, every year 1170 and every week 22 murders are taking place. These are the highest in the world.
Honor killing did not stop even after becoming a law
In 2016, a strict law was introduced to prevent incidents of honor killings. This law was made after the murder of famous Pakistani model Qandeel Baloch. According to this law, there is a provision for the death penalty for the guilty of honor killing, but after all the amendments this law has become weak.
In December 2021, 197 cases of honor killings were reported in Punjab province 2019, while in 2020 more than 237 cases were registered.
Jirga system used to add fuel to the fire
Panchayats have a role in the killings. Tahira Gul, the chairperson of an NGO, says that in some cases the local jirga system encourages crime against women. In June 2002, a local jirga of Muzaffargarh in Pakistan's southern Punjab district ordered the gangrape of Mukhtaran Mai. The decrees of the government-backed jirga encourage the killings of women.
