" Sharif's tweet comes a day after he ruled out the possibility of considering food imports from India to make up for the shortage caused by the devastating floods.

 

On Monday, Pakistan's Finance Minister Mifta Ismail told the media that his country may consider importing vegetables and other food items from India to help people deal with the widespread destruction of crops in flash floods. Sharif faced questions over possible food imports and resumption of trade with India when he briefed the international media in Islamabad about the unprecedented floods. “There will be no problem in doing business with India but there is a genocide going on and Kashmiris have been denied their rights.

 

Referring to India's 2019 decision to scrap Jammu and Kashmir's special status and bifurcate the region into two union territories, Sharif said, "Kashmir has been forcibly annexed by abrogation of Article 370." We have to dedicate our meager resources to reducing poverty in our respective countries, but we cannot live peacefully without solving these issues.

 

Hundreds of people have died in floods and landslides triggered by unprecedented monsoon rains. 33 million people have been displaced. Torrential rains have killed more than 1,000 people in Pakistan, where nearly half a million people are in relief camps. Officials estimate more than $10 billion in damage. The country now faces an imminent food crisis with massive agricultural land under water.

 

On Wednesday, Ismail said that international agencies have approached the country's government to allow imports from India through the land border, however, the Pakistan government after consultations with its coalition partners and key stakeholders has been short of supplies.
