Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav's statements following the victory over Pakistan in the 2025 Asia Cup have embroiled controversy. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has filed a complaint with the ICC regarding his comments.
Even though India secured a berth in the Asia Cup final by defeating Bangladesh by 41 runs in the Super Four match, the complaint filed against captain Surya has caused tension within the team. Will the ICC ban Captain Surya or impose a fine? Let's find out what the rules say.
PCB files a complaint against Suryakumar Yadav
Indeed, the PCB has filed a complaint regarding Surya's comments during the post-match presentation and press conference during the India-Pakistan Asia Cup Super Four match, which was played on September 14, 2025. ICC match referee Richie Richardson has sent an email to the Indian team management.
It states that the PCB has complained about Suryakumar Yadav's post-match presentation and press conference. After an investigation, it was determined that his statements could harm the image of the game. Therefore, charges are made against Suryakumar.
The email states that if Surya does not accept the allegations, a hearing will be held. That hearing will include me, Surya, and a PCB representative.
Will Surya be banned?
According to the ICC Code of Conduct, this case is generally considered a Level 1 offense. Level 1 violations do not result in a ban; they only carry a fine of a percentage of the match fee. A ban is imposed only if there is a Level 2, 3, or 4 offense (such as abusive language, threats, or ball tampering). This means that Suryakumar Yadav is unlikely to be banned, but he could be fined.
What did Suryakumar say?
In the presentation after the India-Pakistan match, Suryakumar Yadav said, "We dedicate this victory to the martyrs of the Pulwama terrorist attack (Pahalgam) and our soldiers." Furthermore, in the press conference, Surya stated that the government and the BCCI had instructed us not to shake hands with Pakistani players after the match.
