On Wednesday evening, a crowd of RCB fans gathered near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore to see their star players. Then suddenly a stampede broke out during the victory parade near the stadium. In this, 11 people died and many were seriously injured. When the stampede stopped, shoes and slippers were scattered near the stadium.
There was mourning all around. Some were running with someone in the lap and some were giving CPR. Everyone was shedding tears on this tragic incident. Many people cursed the system and fans expressed disappointment.
'We were beaten up'
Speaking to news agency PTI, Prashant Shetty, who had come to attend the ceremony with some friends, said, 'I don't know what we did wrong. We bought tickets for the ceremony. Reached the stadium but, we were beaten up.
We were mistreated. It was a very bad day for fans like us.'
The tickets for the hastily organized victory ceremony were sold out immediately but the fans had gathered at gate numbers 12, 13 (main gate) and 10 (club house entry gate). There was not enough security to control them.
The crowd increased at 3.30 pm
According to a PTI report, around 3.30 pm, this number increased to an unexpected level. Police and stadium security officials had to close all the gates, so that people without tickets as well as those with valid tickets could not enter.
The situation out of control at Gate No. 10
Around 4.30 pm, more people came in from the nearby Cubbon Park metro station, worsening the situation. The police had to use mild force to disperse the huge crowd. The situation was even more serious at Gate No. 10. Children and women were being dispersed.
Grateful on returning
Fans who had tickets for the event had no choice but to return disappointed. However, they were grateful that they survived the stampede unscathed. It was a disturbing sight to see women fainting and some others being trampled under the feet of jostling fans.
