The central government has decided to start family medicine courses in the country. The PG in Family Medicine program is being started initially in six AIIMS i.e. All India Institutes of Medical Sciences. Through this post-graduate degree program, the government is trying to bridge the gap created by the shortage of specialist doctors in the country and bring back the concept of family physicians.

The brainstorming took place in the "Heal by India" contemplation camp

Keeping in view the response, this course will be rolled out over time in more hospitals across the country. This was discussed in the two-day contemplation camp "Heal by India" organized by the Union Health Ministry in February. After which the issue was discussed in detail and it has been decided to start the course.

Family doctors are aware of the medical history of the family

In the past, family doctors were the person in the know about any disease, and those doctors were well versed in the medical history of the family, so they were effective in giving general health advice to the people. Also in most cases, there was no need to visit specialist doctors like cardiologists, endocrinologists, pediatrics and gastroenterologist, etc. However, over time such a concept has fallen out of vogue.

There will be an option to do MD in Family Medicine

An official source said that after completing MBBS with this course, there will be an option to do MD in Family Medicine. Recently, a meeting was held between the officials of the Union Health Ministry and NITI Aayog to start such courses in six AIIMS. The meeting also discussed the syllabus, which will include the study of departments like General Medicine, Basic Surgery, Gynecology, Pediatrics, etc. in the Post Graduate Course in Family Medicine.
