Modi Surname Case A court in Surat is likely to pronounce its verdict today on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's plea against the conviction in the 'Modi surname' case. The petition has sought a stay on his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his remarks on 'Modi surname'.
2 years sentence
Rahul Gandhi has been sentenced to 2 years in jail by the Surat court for making a wrong comment on Modi's surname. The sentence was awarded after the court found him guilty in the ongoing defamation case against him. However, on April 3, the Surat Sessions Court granted bail to the Congress leader after Rahul appealed against the sentence.
Rahul's Lok Sabha membership also lost
Rahul Gandhi was a Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad, but was disqualified after a lower court in Surat sentenced him to two years in jail on March 23.
However, the sessions court later, while granting bail to the former MP, also issued notice to complainant Purnesh Modi and the state government on the Congress leader's plea to stay his conviction. The court heard both the sides and then reserved the order for April 20.
this is the whole matter
Let us tell you that this matter is related to the remarks made by Rahul Gandhi using the surname 'Modi' while addressing a campaign program before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In April 2019, at a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, Rahul took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying how all thieves have Modi as their surname.
In this case, Gujarat BJP leader Purnesh Modi had filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi, on which he was sentenced to two years. The BJP termed Rahul's remarks against Modi and the entire OBC community.
