Russia continues to suffer losses in the Ukraine war. Ukraine is rapidly getting Russia back its lost cities. Meanwhile, Putin has now changed his commander. Now the new commander of the Ukraine war being fought by Russia will be General Valery Gerasimov, the most senior officer of the Russian army.
Who is the Chief of General Staff of Russia? Valery Gerasimov has been in this position since 2012. He will now take full responsibility for the Ukraine war in place of Sergei Surovikin. Surovikin had been leading the Ukraine war for the last three months.
Sergey Surovikin started increasing his strength
The Defense Ministry of Russia has told that this reshuffle has been done for better coordination in different branches of the Army Forces. According to military analyst Rob Lee, Surovikin was not removed because he was unable to win the Ukraine war. Rather there are political reasons behind it.
Surovikin had become very powerful since becoming the war commander, reaching out to Putin directly rather than through Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Russia's Chief of General Staff.
Now war will be more dangerous
A Moscow-based expert told Al Jazeera that it was important for the chief of staff himself lead the Ukraine war. According to him, now the war will be bigger and more dangerous. At the same time, many Russian military bloggers believe that all the responsibility is being put on Surovikin for the recent defeat in the war and the soldiers killed in Makievka. They have been made mere pawns.
This is how Sergei Surovikin increased Ukraine's problems
Even though Russia had to leave the Kherson area of Ukraine after Sergei Surovikin was made the war commander. Despite this, Sergei had brought Ukraine to its knees many times by using drones and missiles. Under the leadership of Sergei, Russia has repeatedly attacked the energy centers of Ukraine.
Sergei Surovikin was appointed in September
On September 8, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the appointment of 55-year-old General Sergei Surovikin as the overall commander of Russian forces in Ukraine. For the first time in the Ukraine War, which began on 24 February, a single commander was officially appointed for the entire Russian army. Surovikin was earlier commanding the Russian Air Force.
Surovikin is one of Russia's best-known generals and has been recognized in Russia as the general who made a mark in many of the country's major military operations. Sergei became most famous or infamous because of his operation in Syria. Surovikin was awarded the Hero of the Russian Federation award in December 2017 for his services in Syria.
