So far 868 buildings have developed cracks due to land subsidence in Joshimath, Uttarakhand. Chamoli's DM Himanshu Khurana informed him about this on Friday. He said that 181 of these buildings are in unsafe areas. The demolition work of Hotel Mount View and Malari Inn is in the final stages.
He said that 878 members of 243 disaster-affected families were in relief camps. They are being provided with facilities for food, drink, and medicines. A relief amount of 515.80 lahks has been given to these families. That money has been given for relief, rehabilitation, and meeting basic needs.
Earlier on January 28, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) had put the number of cracked buildings at 863.
What happened in Joshimath...
December 27: People warn of agitation after cracks appear in Joshimath's houses. After this, a 5-member team of engineers and officers from the administration investigated the cracks. After this, cracks kept increasing in the houses of Joshimath, and when the situation worsened, the state and central government took note of it.
Jan 6: Fear increased as cracks appeared in about 500 houses and buildings. Evacuation of people living in affected houses to safer places was expedited.
January 7: Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami reached Joshimath to take stock of the situation. Meanwhile, Chamoli's DM Himanshu Khurana told that the problem is only in a few areas. The CM directed to provide all possible help to the affected people.
January 8: The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) held a high-level meeting regarding the situation in Joshimath. The district administration has been asked to shift the people to a safer place at the earliest. PM Modi spoke to the state's CM Dhami on this issue.
January 9: A team from the Center arrived in the evening to take stock of the damage caused to buildings in Joshimath. The team investigated and submitted the report to the state government. 478 houses and 2 hotels were declared as danger zones. At the same time, the Uttarakhand government decided to divide Joshimath into three zones. Till January 9, 81 families were displaced.
January 10: The demolition of two hotels in Joshimath was stopped after protests by the local people. The hotel owners said that no notice has been given to us. Along with this, he also raised the demand for compensation. The Supreme Court refused to hold an urgent hearing on the matter.
