Quad countries US, India, Australia, and Japan said on Thursday that the Indo-Pacific region would not be allowed to become Ukraine. This announcement has been made at a time when there are fears of a Chinese attack on Taiwan on the lines of Ukraine. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said in the virtual meeting that the leaders of the Quad agreed not to take advantage of Ukraine's situation in the Indo-Pacific.
Referring to Russia's attack on Ukraine, Kishida said, "We have also agreed that no one should be allowed to unilaterally change the status quo in the Indo-Pacific region." This step is significant towards a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Kurt Campbell, the White House coordinator for the Indo-Pacific, said on Monday that the US would keep its focus on the Indo-Pacific region despite the Ukraine crisis.
Modi said Ukraine's solution should be found through dialogue and diplomacy
Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida attended this virtual summit. Ukraine issue was also discussed in the meeting. During this, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the need to return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy. He said that every issue can be resolved through dialogue. In such a situation, we should leave the path of violence and end the crisis through dialogue and diplomacy.
The meeting reviewed the issues decided in the Quad Summit held in September 2021. During this, the leaders of the four countries should work towards achieving concrete results and intensify cooperation before the summit in Japan later this year.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the Quad should focus on its core objective of promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. He called for concrete and practical steps of cooperation in areas such as humanitarian and disaster relief, credit stability, supply chain, clean energy, connectivity, and capacity building. The leaders also discussed other issues during the meeting.
It discussed the situation in Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean region, and the Pacific Islands. The Prime Minister reiterated the importance of respecting the United Nations Charter, international law and sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The leaders agreed to maintain cooperation and work towards an ambitious agenda for the upcoming Leaders' Summit in Japan.
