The situation in India's neighboring country, Bangladesh, remains very unstable. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to Mohammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh. PM Modi wrote this letter on Bangladesh's National Day.
In this letter, PM Modi mentioned history and described the unbreakable spirit of the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971 as the foundation of strong India-Bangladesh relations. It reminded Bangladesh of India's role in its establishment.
The PM wrote,
"I extend my best wishes to you and the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of Bangladesh National Day. This day is a testimony to our shared history and sacrifices, which have laid the foundation of our bilateral partnership. The spirit of Bangladesh's Liberation War continues to be the guiding light for our relations, which have flourished in many areas and are bringing concrete benefits to our people." PM Modi said that we are committed to taking this partnership forward based on our shared aspirations for peace, stability and prosperity and mutual sensitivity to each other's interests and concerns. Both leaders will attend the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok on 3-4 April. Dhaka has sought a bilateral meeting, while India has remained silent on the issue so far.
India reminded Bangladesh of its history
Relations between the two countries have become strained after the Awami League government led by India's old ally Sheikh Hasina was toppled following a nationwide movement and the former prime minister was forced to flee to India. The interim government formed after the change of power is headed by Nobel laureate and economist Muhammad Yunus.
Amid reports of attacks on minorities, India has shared its concerns with Bangladesh. Dhaka has said that the attacks are not communal but politically motivated.
Yunus had expressed his desire to meet PM Modi.
