America and Japan have imposed new sanctions on North Korea. This action has been taken because of the latest ballistic missile test conducted by military ruler Kim Jong Un.
America's Biden administration imposed sanctions on three leaders of North Korea. All three are leaders of North Korean organizations involved in the development of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs). At the same time, Japan has imposed sanctions on three entities and one person linked to North Korea's nuclear weapons and missile programs.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury today approved sanctions against three officials of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). All three supported the large-scale manufacture of weapons of mass destruction in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). These weapons include ballistic missiles equipped with nuclear warheads.
This step has been taken in the wake of North Korea firing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on 18 November. This was North Korea's eighth test of a ballistic missile this year. The US and Japan said the move was aimed at deterring the DPRK from its illegal weapons development programs and ballistic missile tests. These threaten regional stability.
The US is taking trilateral action against North Korea's weapons program. It is taking tough measures together with South Korea and Japan against officials who have played a leading role in the DPRK's illegal weapons program and ballistic missile tests.
US Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson said that because of the latest tests by North Korea, all countries should come forward to fully implement the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. North Korea has conducted dozens of missile tests. Since the beginning of this year, multiple missiles have been fired simultaneously on a few occasions. Last month, North Korea fired more than 20 short-range missiles.
On the other hand, North Korea says that it is conducting missile tests in response to provocation by the US and its allies.
