A Bangladesh court delivered its verdict today against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The trial concluded on October 23rd. Judges at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) convicted her on five serious charges, stating that she deserves the maximum punishment. She has been sentenced to death.

Sheikh Hasina faces serious charges of murder and conspiracy, which warrant the death penalty. After the trial concluded on October 23rd, the judges reserved their verdict. The verdict is 400 pages long and divided into six parts.

Reaching the verdict, the court stated:

Sheikh Hasina committed crimes against humanity. Six protesters were killed in Chankharpul on August 5th. On Sheikh Hasina's orders, the then Home Minister and Inspector General took action, resulting in the deaths of several students. This occurred on Sheikh Hasina's orders.

A three-judge bench delivered the verdict.

In addition to Sheikh Hasina, the case currently pending in court involves former Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Ali. A three-judge bench headed by Justice Mohammad Golam Majumder delivered the verdict.

The verdict is being read and recorded before being delivered. This is why there may be a slight delay. The court stated that several reports claim that Sheikh Hasina ordered the attack on protesters, resulting in the deaths. The court has also found substantial evidence against the former Prime Minister.

What did the former Prime Minister say about the demand for the death penalty?

Many opponents in Bangladesh are demanding the death penalty for Sheikh Hasina. However, Sheikh Hasina has responded by stating that the allegations against her are completely false and that any decision does not affect her.

Sheikh Hasina said:

It does not matter to me. This life has been given by Allah, and He will take it back. The Awami League has risen from the ground. This is not easy. I have full faith in the people of Bangladesh. They will uproot this corrupt, extremist, and murderer Yunus and his associates. The people will definitely do justice.

Sheikh Hasina, while giving a message to her supporters, said, "I am alive, I will remain alive, and will continue to work for the welfare of the people. I will do justice for the people of Bangladesh. Those who are accusing me of human rights violations, let me tell them that I gave shelter to 1 million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh."
