Kolkata, Feb 5 (IANS) The brother of a youth who was fatally beaten up for protesting the harassment of women in West Bengal Thursday refused to accept the state government's job offer until the culprits are arrested and punished.
The 20-year-old youth, Arup Bhandari, slipped into coma after being assaulted for objecting to the harassment of women during an idol immersion procession in Salkia in Howrah district, succumbed to his injuries Monday.
"I acknowledge the proposal of the government job since the family's position is not very stable. But priority is punishment for the culprits. I will not join unless they are arrested. Even if the scheduled joining date is exceeded, then let it be. Punishment for culprits comes first," Bhandari's brother told a TV channel here.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday visited the house of the slain college student and ordered police to arrest the guilty.
The incident has led to an outcry by opposition parties against the state government over its law and order record and alleged "patronage of criminals".
