The Indian Air Force's Jabanj and Accurate Chinook helicopters will be seen flying by two women pilots for the first time. This is the first time that the Air Force has handed over two women fighter pilots to its frontline Chinook helicopter units. Both these Chinook units are playing an important role in providing aid to Indian troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

An Air Force official said on condition of anonymity that Squadron Leader Parul Bhardwaj and Swati Rathore were flying a Russian-made Mi-17V5 helicopter. Now he has been transferred to CH-47F Chinook units at Chandigarh and Mohanbari in Assam.

The Chinook helicopter imported by the US is multi-role. This is the latest helicopter to be inducted into the Air Force fleet and is expected to cost around Rs 650 crore. The Air Force currently operates 15 Chinooks. It was inducted into the fleet in 2019-20. This aircraft is so special that it can transport light howitzers in the border area.

An Air Force official said, "Flying a Chinook is different from flying a Mi-17 or any of them helicopters." It is the only tandem rotor aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force. This aircraft can perform a variety of roles. It also cannot be controlled like other helicopters. Its controls are different. It is used to transport artillery, supplies, and soldiers on the battlefield.

Swati is the first woman pilot to attend the Republic Day parade

Squadron Leader Parul Bhardwaj captained the Mi-17V5 for the first time in 2019. Exactly two years later, Swati Rathore was the first woman helicopter pilot to participate in the 2021 Republic Day Parade on Duty Path (formerly Rajpath). Bharadwaj and Rathore have been assigned to Chinook units at a time when doors have been opened for women in the armed forces.
