Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is facing an economic crisis, has fled the country and fled to the Maldives. Rajapaksa has also tendered his resignation after 139 days of protest. His resignation can be announced in Parliament today and along with it the name of the interim President will also be announced.
The Sri Lankan Air Force Media Director said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the First Lady, and two bodyguards were given full permission from the Defense Ministry regarding immigration, customs, and other laws to travel to the Maldives. On the morning of July 13, he was provided with an Air Force aircraft.
Were trying to leave the country even on Tuesday
Gotabaya had not been seen in Colombo since July 8. They were trying to escape from the Navy ship on Tuesday, 12 July, but immigration officials at the port refused to go to the VIP suite to get the passport stamped. Rajapaksa insisted that he could not use other public facilities due to the ongoing protests across the country, but the officials did not agree.
Biggest question: Runaway or banished?
Gotabaya Rajapaksa had put a condition before resigning that he should be allowed to leave the country. A few hours later, the news of his leaving the country came to the fore. In such a situation, now the question arises whether Gotabaya ran away or was driven away. Rajapaksa signed his resignation on 12 July and handed it over to a senior official. The letter was to be handed over to the Speaker of the Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abhaywardene on July 13.
America did not give visas to Rajapaksa
Gotabaya Rajapaksa wanted to leave Sri Lanka and flee to America, but America did not give him a visa. Rajapaksa had dual citizenship of Sri Lanka and the US but gave up his US citizenship before the 2019 presidential election.
There is a provision for single citizenship in the constitution of Sri Lanka. In such a situation, he only needed to be a citizen of Sri Lanka to contest the presidential election.
President's brother also wants to run away from the country
The president's brother and former finance minister, Basil Rajapaksa, was trying to flee the country but had to return after protests from immigration staff at the airport. While the public is yearning for food grains in the country, Basil had booked four business class tickets to go to America for 113 million Sri Lankan rupees.
An intelligence bunker was found in Rashtrapati Bhavan
A video surfaced on July 10, in which it was claimed to be a secret passage in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The people protesting claimed that the President had run out of this intelligence route after saving his life. This bunker was built on the first floor of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Before leaving the bunker, a wooden cupboard has been fitted here. Its structure is such that it is difficult for anyone to know it at once.
Premadasa to be interim president
Sri Lanka's main opposition party Samagi Jana Balvegaya (SJB) chief Sajith Premadasa has been appointed as the interim President of Sri Lanka. The SJB on Monday undisputedly nominated Premdas for the post of interim President. Presidential elections in Sri Lanka are to be held on 20 July and Parliament will be in session on 15 July.

Unable to get good one-time food

The situation is so critical that there are situations like starvation and malnutrition. Due to lack of diesel, boats are not able to go to sea, due to which fish are not being caught. For many, this crisis has persisted for months.
