Tahawwur Rana, who plotted the 2008 terror attacks on India's financial capital Mumbai, can reach India at any time. India has been trying to extradite Rana and his partner David Coleman Headley for the last 17 years. India has not had much success in Headley's case so far, but in the case of Tahawwur Rana, the lower courts of America, the Supreme Court, and President Donald Trump accepted India's claims and approved his extradition.
Why did his name come up in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks?
It is claimed that Tahawwur Rana also gave David Headley a job in his consultancy firms. David Headley came to Mumbai for the work of the Mumbai branch of this firm and did a recce of major places like Taj Mahal Hotel and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai to prepare for the terrorist attacks of Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Investigators believe that Tahawwur Rana got the entire recce work done by David Headley under the guise of a consultancy firm. In 2008, 10 terrorists of Pakistan's terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba entered Mumbai and attacked the city. 166 people, including six American citizens and some Jews, were killed in these brutal attacks.
During interrogation in America, Headley gave full information about the conspiracy of the Mumbai attack to the prosecutors. According to this...
How different is the case in which Rana was found guilty in America from the case in India?
Headley and Rana were heard in the cases registered in America. Here Headley made many revelations in the court. Headley said that Tahawwur Rana had approved his visit to Denmark to attack the Danish newspaper. He had gone to Denmark as a representative of the Immigration Law Center from Rana's firm. For this, Rana had printed Headley's business cards. However, the attack on Jyllands-Posten newspaper, codenamed 'Mickey Mouse Project' by Al-Qaeda, could not be carried out. Headley-Rana was accused of plotting to attack the newspaper's employees and target a nearby Jewish place of worship.
Mumbai Attack: 'No need to provide facilities like biryani or Kasab in jail', 26/11 hero's bravery criticized
The shocking thing is that in 2011, Rana was tried in both cases in the US and was convicted of helping Pakistan's terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba in conspiring to attack the Danish newspaper. However, despite much evidence, the jury of the US District Court acquitted him of the charge of involvement in the Mumbai attacks. In January 2013, Rana was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison, after which he was ordered to be kept under surveillance for five years.
This happened when David Headley openly gave evidence against Tahawwur Rana to the prosecutors in both the cases. However, Rana's lawyers said that David Headley has been an expert in escaping by lying. He implicated many old friends in criminal cases and himself escaped with a lesser sentence.
What did he say/do to not be sent to India?
After the emergency review petition was rejected in the Supreme Court, Tahawwur Rana once again sent an application to US Chief Justice John Roberts. In this, Rana appealed to him to stop his extradition. However, the Chief Justice rejected his demand.
Rana, who is lodged in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, had earlier filed petitions in the Supreme Court demanding a stay on his extradition, citing his poor health. He had said that he had suffered a heart attack several times.
Apart from this, he also argued that he was suffering from Parkinson's. There are reports of flesh growing on his bladder, which could be bladder cancer. He had described himself as suffering from kidney disease. He has been infected with coronavirus several times and also has asthma.
Apart from this, he said in the Supreme Court that he is a Muslim of Pakistani origin, so he can be tortured in India, which can take his life in a very short time. However, US President Donald Trump has approved the extradition of the accused of the 26/11 attack. In such a situation, there is little chance of Tahawwur Rana getting government help. India has also started preparations in view of the possibility of his extradition.
What preparations are being made for Tahawwur Rana in India?
Rana will be brought to India and presented in the NIA court. The NIA will seek his custody from the court for interrogation. With this, the judicial process will begin against Rana in the Mumbai terror attack case in India.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had indicated in February that Tahawwur Rana would be kept in the same jail where 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab was kept.
On the other hand, Delhi's Tihar Jail administration has also started preparations to build a high-security jail ward for Tahawwur Rana. However, the final decision on where Rana will be kept will be taken by the Home Ministry.
After exhausting his remaining chances in the US court, Rana was extradited by the Trump government. According to reports, as soon as this information was received, an NIA team left to take him. It has been revealed that IG-DIG and two junior officers were involved in this.
