With the victory of NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan in the post of Vice President, a new chapter has begun in Parliament. In such a situation, on Wednesday, the Congress congratulated CP Radhakrishnan on his victory. Along with this, the party recalled the historic words of the country's first Vice President, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, in the Rajya Sabha in 1952, in which he had said that if the opposition in a democracy is not given the freedom to criticize the policies of the government fairly, independently, and clearly, then it can turn into a dictatorship.
Congress recalled the words of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that we congratulate CP Radhakrishnan on becoming the new Vice President of India and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. On this occasion, we remember those inspiring words of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, which he said in the first meeting of the Rajya Sabha on 16 May 1952.
Ramesh further quoted those words of Dr. Radhakrishnan, in which Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had said that I do not belong to any one party, which means that I belong to every party in this House. My endeavour will be to uphold the traditions of parliamentary democracy and treat every party with fairness and goodwill, without malice towards anyone and goodwill towards all. Along with this, Jairam Ramesh also added that whatever Dr Radhakrishnan said, he put into practice with full honesty.
The opposition called this victory a political defeat.
Let us tell you that in the Vice Presidential election, CP Radhakrishnan got 452 votes, while the opposition candidate, Justice (Retd.) B Sudarshan Reddy got 300 votes. In this way, Radhakrishnan won by a bigger margin than expected. However, the Congress described this victory as just mathematical. Also claimed that this is the moral and political defeat of the BJP.
Jairam Ramesh said on Tuesday that the opposition remained completely united in this election, and its performance was respectable. Reddy got 40% of the total votes, while in 2022, the opposition got only 26% of the votes. This shows the strength of our ideological fight.
