The ability to spread terror through social media is more than ever: Union Minister of State Nityanand Rai

Union Minister of State (MoS) Nityanand Rai said in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the problem of terrorism in India is largely sponsored from across the border. "Global terrorist groups and some foreign agencies hostile to India are trying to radicalize people and spread terrorism through social media platforms, internet, etc." Nityanand Rai said that cyberspace is virtual and borderless. With the possibility of instant communication and anonymity with borderless cyberspace, the potential for spread of terror through the use of social media is greater than ever, posing a threat to sovereignty and integrity." He also said that law enforcement agencies Closely monitor the activities of social media platforms and takes appropriate action as per legal provisions. Furthermore, under section 69A of the Information Technology Act 2000, the government blocks illegal and malicious online content, including social media accounts.

 

He further said that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Act 2008 was amended in 2019 for effective and speedy investigation. Rai said, "For effective and speedy investigation and prosecution of offenses related to cyber terrorism, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Act 2008 was amended in 2019, to include section 66F of the Information Technology Act, 2000 in its schedule."
