The strings of Amitabh Bachchan's 'Jhund' releasing this week are related to Aamir Khan's show 'Satyamev Jayate'. The producer of the film Savita Raj Hiremath has revealed this. In a special conversation with Dainik Bhaskar, he told, "In that show, an episode was done by Aamir Khan on Nagpur's social worker Vijay Barse. Vijay Barse was a sports teacher in college. After retirement, he used to see the other side of the college wall. The children of the slum were in the grip of drugs. There was no purpose in their life. Many children even had criminal records. Vijay was determined that he had to bring those children on the right track. He appeared in the film Journey. We had planned to make a film on Vijay Barse after watching that episode."
We had taken the rights for the film in 2015 from Bijay Barse
Savita explains in detail the reason for taking Nagraj Manjule on board as director and the story of Amitabh Bachchan joining the film. He told, "We had taken the rights from Bijay Barse in 2015. The background of the film was set in Nagpur. Also, Nagraj's 'Sairat' and 'Fandry' had arrived by then and how popular it was and became a national film, They all know. However, Bachchan sahib came on board in the year 2018. Although Big B had not seen 'Sairat' till then. So he ordered and watched it. Before that, the story of 'Jhund' was also heard by Aamir Khan. He also told Bachchan sahib that he should do this film. This film was not approached to Aamir Khan as he had already coached sports in 'Dangal'."
Casting un-trend child and teenage actors for the film
In the film, Nagraj Manjule adopted the method of 'Sairat' in the casting of the slum children to whom Amitabh Bachchan's character teaches football. Like in 'Sairat', he also cast untrained child and teenage actors in 'Jhund'. For that, he organized auditions in five states. Some of the actors are definitely from earlier films. Nagraj also went to Bengal, because football is played there the most. There are some Sardars from Punjab. Along with Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, a child has also been cast from UP. The child whose screen name is Don in the film is from Nagpur.
Amitabh Bachchan stayed there even in the filthy environment on the set of the slum.
It was difficult to shoot in the crowd of slums with Amitabh Bachchan in Mumbai. In such a situation, the makers created a set of slums in Nagpur itself. Savita said, “We started shooting at the end of 2018. Amitabh Bachchan gave us a date for 60 days. He stayed in Nagpur for two months. He did not even shoot for any other film, while the slum set If yes, then there was dirt to be shown. He stayed there in that environment too. He was designed by the younger brother of the set director. It took four crores to build the set of the slum. We built it in the slum open ground. Vijay rained on the set too. Children. It took him six months to teach football. During training, Nagraj Manjule kept the kids at home in Satara district."
More than 50 crores spent in the making of 'Jhund'
More than 50 crores were spent in the making of 'Jhund'. That's because big actors like Amitabh Bachchan were a part of the film. Also, there was a crew of 100 people. The entire shooting of the film took 90 days. Amitabh Bachchan alone gave 60 days of dates for his portion. Savita says, “We were getting good offers to release it on OTT. However, we and Bhushan Kumar decided to bring it to theaters only. Earlier the deal was with Amazon Prime. But now it will come on Zee5. In India, we are planning to release it on 1200 to 1500 screens. In Abroad we are planning to bring it to 400 screens.”
