Will a new wave of Corona rise from Hong Kong? The new figures in this commercial city are testimony to the same thing. On Monday, Hong Kong recorded the highest number of corona cases at 34,466. There are already deaths from Corona in the city. Meanwhile, health officials said that the lockdown in Hong Kong cannot be ruled out. However, this news comes at a time when the city leader said last week that there is no truth in imposing a nationwide lockdown.

Hong Kong is currently battling the fifth wave of the coronavirus, mainly caused by the Omicron variant. Monday's more than 34,000 cases are more than quadruple from a week ago. The city had recorded more than 7,500 infections a week ago.

"The number of cases will double every three days. We think the number will continue to rise," Albert Au, the chief medical and health officer of the city's Center for Health Protection, said during the daily virus briefing. On Monday, 87 people also died in the city. Of the 87 deaths, 67 were not vaccinated.

Health officials said measures could be taken by the government in which "people can be asked to stay at home". However, it remains to be seen whether such measures will be taken through legislation or other means.

Hong Kong's Health Minister Sophia Chan said during a radio program on Monday that the government was "still discussing" the matter of a lockdown to minimize the movement of people and maximize the effect of mass testing.

Hong Kong authorities last week announced citywide universal testing for March, with the city's more than 7 million residents undergoing tests three times.

Meanwhile, officials have extended social distancing measures, such as a ban on eating out after 6 pm until April, and extended the summer vacation for students to March to allow schools to have testing centers, isolation facilities, and vaccinations. can be changed in the premises. Students whose holidays have been extended are likely to attend school during the summer, although international schools in the city are not affected.

Since the start of the fifth wave in Hong Kong in late 2021, the city has recorded 193,149 infections.
