A very sensational revelation has come to light in the Birbhum incident. Forensic experts report that eight people, including three women and two children, who were burnt alive in Bogtui village of Bengal's Birbhum district, were brutally beaten up before the massacre. This has been revealed in his post-mortem examination.
According to preliminary findings of forensic experts, the victims were first severely beaten up and then burnt alive, an official told news agency PTI from the Rampurhat hospital. Forensic experts had examined the bodies of people who were set ablaze, allegedly by unidentified people, in the early hours of Tuesday.
20 people were arrested
At least 20 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident. A total of eight people, including two children, were burnt to death after a dozen houses were allegedly torched in Bogtui village of Rampurhat in the early hours of Tuesday. The incident happened within hours of the alleged murder of Trinamool Congress (TMC) panchayat level leader Bhadu Sheikh on Monday.
A petrol bomb was attacked and set on fire
After the murder of the Trinamool Congress leader, around a dozen houses were allegedly torched with petrol bombs in Bogatui village on the outskirts of Rampurhat town. It is said that some people set fire to houses in retaliation for the murder of their leader.
The police have so far arrested at least 20 people in this connection. The state government has suspended several administrative and police officers for alleged negligence.
Security has been tightened in Rampurhat to avoid any untoward incident during the scheduled visit of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. A senior police official said CCTVs have been installed around the helipad, where the chief minister's helicopter will land.
Before leaving for Bogatui village, Mamata Banerjee will hold a meeting with Director General of Police Manoj Malviya and several other senior police officers. Later she may also visit Rampurhat hospital to meet the injured.
Congress Bengal unit chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and a five-member central team of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will also visit Bogtui village. The Chief Minister has said that strict action will be taken against the culprits, irrespective of the political party they belong to. Terming these killings as a heinous crime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the culprits should not be forgiven.
The West Bengal government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Additional Director General of Police (CID) Gyanwant Singh to probe the incident. The Union Home Ministry has sought a detailed report on the incident from the state government.
