Manmohan Singh chose South Delhi Lok Sabha seat to contest the election. Here the population of Muslims and Sikhs together was around 50 percent. Thinking this, Manmohan Singh felt that this seat was the most suitable and he would win the election. BJP fielded a senior BJP leader from Delhi VK Malhotra against Manmohan Singh. He did not have a nationwide identity like Manmohan Singh. Malhotra started his political journey with Jan Sangh. But Manmohan Singh lost the election by about 30 thousand votes. During this time, BJP's Vijay Malhotra got 261230 votes. Whereas Manmohan got 231231 votes. This electoral defeat was like a shock for Manmohan.
