Thinking this, Manmohan Singh felt that this seat was the most suitable and he would win the election. BJP fielded a senior BJP leader from Delhi VK Malhotra against Manmohan Singh. He did not have a nationwide identity like Manmohan Singh. Malhotra started his political journey with Jan Sangh. But Manmohan Singh lost the election by about 30 thousand votes.
