Train travel in India is set to become more expensive from Friday, December 26th. Indian Railways has increased fares across the country, the second such hike in six months.
This will affect long-distance passengers traveling in both AC and non-AC coaches of Mail and Express trains. The revised fares will also apply to busy rail routes like Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Mumbai.
Millions of passengers will be affected. The fare hike is expected to generate approximately ₹600 crore in additional revenue for the railways.
How much will the fares increase?
Ordinary (Non-AC) Trains
Second Class Ordinary:
Up to 215 km: No increase
216-750 km: ₹5 increase
751-1250 km: ₹10 increase
1251-1750 km: ₹15 increase
1751-2250 km: ₹20 increase
Sleeper Class: 1 paisa per km increase
First Class (Ordinary): 1 paisa per km increase
Mail/Express (Non-AC) Trains:
Second Class, Sleeper Class, and First Class: 2 paise per km increase
AC Class:
AC Chair Car: 2 paise per km increase
AC 3 Tier / 3E: 2 paise per km increase
AC 2 Tier: 2 paise per km increase
AC First Class / Executive Class: 2 paise per km increase
Impact of the fare hike
The fare increase will also apply to other special trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Garib Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Antyodaya, Gatimaan, Yuva Express, and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail.
Key points to understand:
There is no change in the fares of single tickets for suburban trains.
All types of season tickets, whether suburban or non-suburban, will remain unchanged. There has been no change in reservation charges and superfast charges.
GST will continue to be applicable as before, and fares will be rounded off as usual.
The new fares will not apply to tickets issued before December 26, while they will apply to tickets issued by the TTE (Ticket Examiner) on or after December 26, 2025.
