A minor dispute during Holi celebrations in the Hastsal Rehabilitation Colony under the Uttam Nagar police station area of Delhi escalated into a violent clash.
Tarun, a 26-year-old man injured in the incident, died during treatment. Police have so far arrested six accused in the case, and a minor has been detained. A heavy police presence has been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.
The dispute began with a balloon.
According to police, the Uttam Nagar police station received a PCR call about a fight between neighbors at around 11:09 pm on March 4th. Investigation on the spot revealed that the dispute began when a water balloon thrown by a girl landed on a woman passing by.
Family members from both sides then gathered on the street and a scuffle ensued. Three people from one side and five from the other were injured in the clash. Most of them were discharged from the hospital the same day.
Death during treatment
Following the incident, police initially registered a case under sections 110 and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code. Initial action resulted in the arrest of four adults and a minor.
However, on the afternoon of March 5, the 26-year-old Tarun, who was hospitalized, died. Subsequently, the police added section 103(1) of the Indian Penal Code to the case, making it a murder case.
The two families have been neighbors for nearly 50 years and have previously had disputes over minor issues such as parking and garbage disposal.
Police have arrested a total of seven people so far, including six accused, who have been arrested, and one minor will be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
Security increased in the area
Dwarka District Deputy Commissioner of Police Kushal Pal Singh said that security has been increased in the area following the incident. The area has been divided into zones, sectors, and sub-sectors, and police have been deployed, and patrolling is ongoing.
He stated that people from both communities have been spoken to and urged to maintain peace and not pay attention to rumors.
Family Demands CBI Investigation
The deceased Tarun's father said, "We demand justice for our son. The police have not yet conducted any investigation or asked us anything about him. They say they have arrested 5-6 people, but they haven't shown us who they arrested."
We want a CBI investigation. We even went to the police station yesterday, but they locked the doors. When we took to the streets to protest, they resorted to lathi charge.
Tarun's father said, "As soon as my son arrived, 15-20 people attacked him and killed him on the spot. They were all roaming around, but the police haven't arrested anyone."
Appeal to avoid rumors
Police say some anti-social elements are trying to distort the incident. Police have clarified that the situation is under control and urged people not to believe rumors.
