Corona cases are continuously increasing in the country and in the meantime another problem is getting worse. This is the attack of locusts on standing crops. After ravaging Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, he has now shifted to Uttar Pradesh. It has engulfed many districts of the state and due to this the Uttar Pradesh government has had to declare alerts across the state.
The locust swarm reached Rajasthan from Pakistan in the second week of April. It has now reached Jhansi and Agra in Uttar Pradesh, after squaring off crops in 18 districts of Rajasthan and about 12 districts of Madhya Pradesh. This problem is so big that the government of Uttar Pradesh has declared an alert in the entire state. Locusts have engulfed 17 districts in Uttar Pradesh. These include Agra, Aligarh, Mathura, Bulandshahr, Hathras, Etah, Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etawah, Farurkhabad, Auraiya, Jalaun, Kanpur, Jhansi, Mahoba, Hamirpur and Lalitpur.
200 km journey in 5 days
According to officials of the Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Department, a large swarm of locusts can crush several acres of standing crop in an hour. To tackle this situation, the Agriculture Department of Uttar Pradesh has launched a comprehensive campaign to make farmers aware. In Agra, the district administration has put 204 tractors on the front with chemical spray. On 20 May a locust team was spotted in Dausa district of Rajasthan. In just 5 days, it reached Dausa 200 km from Ajmer and has now entered Uttar Pradesh.
Havoc in Madhya Pradesh
Locusts in Madhya Pradesh have destroyed standing crops in at least 12 districts. This is the largest locust attack in the past decade. The locust team reached Mandsaur and Neemuch first on 17 May and on seeing this, it engulfed 10 more districts. The districts of Mandsaur, Neemuch, Ujjain, Dewas, Shajapur, Indore, Khargone, Morena and Sheopur have been the worst affected by the locust attack.
