An emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is underway amid Russia's recognition of two regions of eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk, as independent states. There has also been a reaction from India in this meeting. TS Tirumurti, India's permanent member in UNSC, has given a statement on behalf of India on the Ukraine issue. Tirumurti has appealed to all countries to exercise restraint and to take all possible steps for the well-being of Indian citizens.

The US said that Russian President Putin's move is the basis of Russia's attempt to make excuses for further aggression in Ukraine.
