Uniform Civil Code Bill: A private member's bill related to the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in India was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Friday. BJP MP Kirori Lal Meena introduced it. 63 votes were cast in favor of introducing the bill while 23 votes were cast against it. The bill demands that a National Inspection & Investigation Commission be formed to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country.
All opposition parties including Congress, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, DMK, NCP, and TMC strongly opposed the introduction of the bill. Opposing the introduction of the bill, Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav said that Muslims consider it right to marry their cousins, can Hindus do the same. That's why all religions have different traditions. The Biju Janata Dal did not participate in the voting and walked out of the House.
What was discussed?
Speaking on behalf of the government, Union Minister and Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal said that any member has the right to introduce bills and raise issues in his area. He told all the protesting parties that after the presentation of the bill, when it will be discussed, then every party will be able to present its point. There should be a debate in the Rajya Sabha on this. On the other hand, CPI(M) MP John Brittas, citing the Law Commission report, said that there is no need for a Uniform Civil Code.
Why there is a discussion about Uniform Civil Code
For the last several months, there has been a demand for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code i.e. Uniform Civil Code in the country. BJP-ruled states like Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka have already talked about starting the process of implementing the Uniform Civil Code. In such a situation, the bill presented today is important. However, it is not easy to pass a private member's bill in Parliament. To date, only 3 private member bills have been passed in the history of Parliament. The last such bill was passed in 1971.
BJP has been making promises
In the BJP's manifesto issued for the Gujarat elections, it was said about the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. This bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha a day after the result. Even before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has promised to implement the Uniform Civil Code in its manifesto.
