The Paris Olympics have ended, but Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat is still waiting for justice. She was disqualified before the final. After this, the female wrestler demanded a joint silver medal from CAS. A decision on this matter is also to come today. Meanwhile, news is coming that the United World Wrestling (UWW) can change the rule, due to which this controversy has arisen.
Weight found to be more than the category
Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified before the final of women's 50 kg freestyle wrestling. Her weight was found to be 100 grams more than the category. After this, she appealed to the Sports Arbitration (CAS) to give a joint silver medal. Now the decision on this matter can be given by 6 pm on Tuesday, August 13. At the same time, after being out before the final, Vinesh had announced her retirement on social media. Now Vinesh is expected to get justice from the Sports Arbitration.
There may be a change in the rule
According to media reports, United World Wrestling (UWW) may make some changes in the rules related to the weight of wrestlers. It is being told that the organization is considering changes in these rules. However, it has not been revealed yet what changes can be made to the rules. At the same time, if there is a change in the rule related to the weight of wrestlers, then it will not benefit Vinesh Phogat. The new rule will come into effect from the next tournament.
Statement of the head of United World Wrestling
After Vinesh Phogat was disqualified before the final, United World Wrestling (UWW) chief Nenad Lalovic discussed the rules. Speaking to India Today, UWW chief Nenad Lalovic expressed disappointment and said, "We must respect the rules. I am very sad about what happened to him. He weighed too little. But rules are rules and everything is public. All athletes are there and it is impossible to include someone in the competition who is not in the right weight."
What are the weight rules for Olympic wrestling?
Changes in the names sent by a wrestling association are possible only if an athlete suffers a serious injury, but for that, a medical certificate has to be submitted to the wrestling association. Also, this can be done at least 12 hours before the day of the competition for the respective weight category. After this, no changes can be made.
No changes will be accepted after this time. For all competitions, weights are measured every morning for the respective weight category. The weigh-in and medical checkup last for 30 minutes. Usually, wrestling matches are completed in two days. In such a case, only those wrestlers who are either in the repechage or have reached the final come for weight measurement the next day. The weight measurement program lasts for about 15 minutes the next day.
No wrestler's weight will be measured unless he has undergone a medical examination on the first morning. Wrestlers must appear for medical examination. They must also have their license and recognition certificate with them.
For weight measurement, the athlete must be in a singlet jersey only, which he/she will wear during the match. After being examined by qualified doctors, a wrestler who is suffering from any infectious disease will be disqualified.
No weight tolerance will be allowed for singlets. Competitors must be in perfect physical condition, their nails must be cut very short. During the entire weight measurement period, wrestlers have the right, each in turn, to get their weight measured as many times as they want.
The referee responsible for the weigh-in must check that all wrestlers are of the weight corresponding to the category in which they are entered for the competition and that they meet all the requirements of Article 5. Also, if an athlete enters the mat in the wrong jersey, the opponent can be warned about this.
The referee will refuse to weigh a wrestler who is not wearing the correct clothes. The referee responsible for the weigh-in will receive the results of the draw and will only be allowed to control those athletes who are on this list.
If an athlete does not participate or fails to attend the weigh-in event (both days), he will be excluded from the competition. That athlete will also not be given any rank. If an athlete is injured during his competition on the first day, he will not need to attend the weigh-in on the second day and his rank will continue. For example, if Vinesh got injured after playing all three matches yesterday, then she would not have been present during the weight measurement today and if she had not entered the final, she would have got the silver medal.
