We tell you what are the features of this water metro running on water.
The first water metro will cover an area of 76 km.
The country's first water metro can prove to be a great gift for cities like Kochi. Water Metro Project is the dream project of Kerala to connect Kochi and its 10 surrounding islands. At present, there are 23 water boats and 14 terminals for this project, out of which four terminals are fully ready. At the same time, when this project is completed, it will have 78 water boats and 38 terminals. This water metro will cover an area of 76 km of Kochi backwaters, which will cover six panchayats and three municipalities.
Water Metro will run on two routes on the first day
After the completion of Kerala's dream project, Water Metro will run on 16 routes. According to Loknath Behera, Managing Director of KMRL and Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML), the first water metro with 8 electric-hybrid boats will run from Kerala High Court to Vypin on April 25. Whereas, the water metro of the second route will run till Vytila and Kakkanad.
Best ticketing facility for passengers
The minimum fare for the first water metro running on both routes will be Rs 20 and the maximum Rs 40. Apart from single-journey tickets, Water Metro will also have weekly, monthly, and quarterly passes. The cost of a metro pass for seven days and 12 trips has been fixed at Rs 180. The monthly trip pass is valid for 30 days and is capped at ₹600 for 50 trips. The quarterly pass is priced at ₹1,500 and commuters will be able to avail 150 trips in 90 days. Commuters will also be able to use the Kochi One Card to use the Water Metro. Mobile QR tickets can also be booked through the Kochi One app.
The water metro will run every 15 minutes
The water metro will run for 12 hours daily and will reach its destination every 15 minutes. Using the Water Metro, commuters can reach Vypin from the High Court in less than 20 minutes. One can reach Kakkanad from Vyttila in just 25 minutes. The service of the first route will start at 7 am and will continue till 8 pm. The Water Metro will run every 15 minutes on the High Court-Vypin route during peak hours.
Water Metro will have special facilities
The total cost of this water project is Rs 1,136.83 crore. 100 crore has been invested by the Kerala government in the water metro project and the rest by the German funding agency KfW. In this, a cost of Rs 7 crore has been incurred for a water metro. At the same time, 50 to 100 passengers can sit in each metro. The water metro will have ramp facilities for the disabled, feeding chambers for mothers, and mobile recharge facilities. The water metro will run at a speed of eight knots per hour. The surprising thing is that the water metro will remain at the same level at low tide and high tide.
