Indian team star batsman Suryakumar Yadav created history by winning the T20 World Cup. He has become India’s third captain to win the T20 World Cup, following in the footsteps of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. However, his appointment as captain came as a surprise to everyone, as he hadn’t even served as vice-captain under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. Following Rohit’s retirement from T20 Internationals, Hardik Pandya was considered the frontrunner for the role; yet, in a surprising move, the BCCI entrusted the responsibility to Suryakumar. Consequently, the question arose: how exactly did he come to be given this responsibility?
Not Gautam Gambhir: These Four Individuals Were Behind It
Many believed that Suryakumar received the captaincy thanks to Head Coach Gautam Gambhir; however, Suryakumar himself has now made a major revelation regarding this. He disclosed that Jay Shah, Ajit Agarkar, Rahul Dravid, and Rohit Sharma collectively decided to appoint him as captain. He stated, “There was a moment—about three or four days before the Sri Lanka series—when Jay bhai called me and informed me that I was going to be appointed as the captain of the T20 team moving forward.”
How Was the Decision Made? Suryakumar Explains the Entire Process
Suryakumar further explained that this decision was part of a pre-planned strategy. He remarked, “I was quite certain that Rohit bhai and Ajit bhai were planning all of this. Gautam bhai came into the picture later. Rahul Sir and the others held discussions with Jay bhai and subsequently decided that the command of the team should be handed over to me.” This statement clarifies that the decision regarding the captaincy was reached following collective deliberations involving the team management and the top officials of the Board.
A Stellar Record as Captain
Suryakumar Yadav boasts an exceptionally impressive record as captain. To date, he has led the team in 52 T20 matches, securing victory in 42 of them. His win percentage exceeds 80 percent—a figure considered remarkably impressive for any captain. Furthermore, since becoming the permanent captain, he has not lost a single bilateral T20 series. This stands as a testament to his exceptional leadership skills.
Closing in on Rohit Sharma’s Record
At 35 years of age, Suryakumar is rapidly climbing the ranks of India’s most successful T20 captains. He stands just eight wins away from matching Rohit Sharma’s record. If he maintains his current form, he could soon break Rohit’s record and emerge as India’s most successful T20 captain.
A New Direction for Team India
Under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, Team India has embraced a new style of aggressive and modern cricket. His leadership has also provided opportunities to young players, thereby making the team’s future appear even more robust.
