Wayanad landslide: 123 people died in the Wayanad landslide, 4 villages were destroyed, and body parts of people were found in the mud

Four villages were destroyed in a massive landslide in Wayanad, Kerala on Tuesday due to heavy rains. At least 123 people have died while hundreds have been injured. A large number of people are still feared to be trapped in the debris.

 

The army and rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue work on a war footing. The horror of this natural disaster can be gauged from the fact that rescue workers are finding mutilated body parts of people in rivers and mud.

It is still very difficult to find out the exact number of people killed in the tragedy. In this hilly area, which has natural beauty, now only scenes of destruction are visible everywhere. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Kerala CM P: Vijayan and assured all possible help.

 

People were sleeping... death came at the doorstep

The landslide-affected areas include Mundakkai, Choorlammala, Attmala, and Noolpuzha villages of Wayanad. The incidents of hill collapse occurred early Tuesday morning when people were fast asleep. The first landslide occurred at around 2 am late night and then the next one occurred at 4.30 am.

 

Teams engaged in rescuing trapped people

Due to heavy rains and landslides, a large number of houses were destroyed, water-filled in reservoirs, and trees were uprooted. Rescue teams including the Indian Army are making tireless efforts to rescue the trapped people. Apart from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the state government has also deployed disaster response teams from the police and fire force in the affected areas.

 

Union Minister also left for Wayanad.

Air Force helicopters are also engaged in rescue and relief work. On the other hand, Union Minister of State George Kurien is reaching Wayanad to lead the relief and rescue operation. On the instructions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the minister will coordinate with the National Disaster Relief Force personnel, paramilitary forces, Kerala government officials, and other agencies in the operation.

 

Trained dogs sent from Meerut.

 

Specially trained dogs of the Army's special dog unit have also left for Wayanad from Meerut for relief and rescue work. These dogs can smell human remains and even the slightest smell of the breath of people buried under the soil. The calls being made by people trapped in demolished houses and under the pile of debris to seek help are telling the horrific picture of the natural disaster.

Videos and pictures of crying people pleading for their lives also went viral on the internet media. The disaster-affected people were either trapped in their homes or had no way to move due to floods and washed-away bridges. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that 123 people died and about 128 people were injured in the massive landslide in northern Wayanad district.

 

Hundreds of people are still trapped in the debris.

 

According to the Chief Minister, hundreds of people got trapped in the debris due to the landslide, and many people got swept away. Sources said that many women and children are also among the dead. Many people injured in the landslide have been admitted to various hospitals. The bodies of the deceased are being taken to the morgues of various hospitals for identification and post-mortem.

 

Rahul and Priyanka will go to Wayanad on Wednesday.

 

There was a lot of fighting on the hospital premises as well. People were seen searching for their loved ones. On the other hand, Congress sources said that the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will visit landslide-affected Wayanad on Wednesday morning.

 

Made a chain by holding hands so that they do not get swept away

 

While rescue operations were going on in various villages, people were seen saving especially elderly men and women by making temporary bridges after the bridge was washed away due to the landslide. In some places, people were seen holding each other with full strength so that they could not be swept away in the strong flow of flood water.

 

Man seen struggling for life clinging to a rock.

In a heartbreaking scene, a man covered in mud was seen struggling to survive by clinging to a huge rock in the floodwaters in Mundakkai village while helpless locals could only watch his agony and were unable to help him. They were pleading with the authorities to rescue him immediately. It is feared that the man was swept away by the floodwaters and got stuck between huge rocks.
