The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday dismissed the plea of girl students, saying that hijab is not a mandatory part of Islam.
Since then, there have been reactions from all political parties, law experts, and people in favor of wearing the hijab.
The BBC has tried to know their side by talking to people reacting to the court's decisions in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
What do girls say in Uttar Pradesh?
BBC correspondent Anant Jhanane has tried to know their side by talking to some girl students in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.
Shabina Bano, who is pursuing her BA in Lucknow, believes that girls should be given the freedom to wear whatever they feel comfortable in.
She would say, "We challenge this decision that has been taken. We girls will wear them if they feel comfortable. But you can't target their clothes. Now people of Punjab wear turbans so you can also wear them. Will you target? The constitution gives us the right that you can wear anything, you can eat anything. We are following the culture of India. If we look at the culture of India, then the purdah system is everywhere. If you look at Hindu women, they are also following her. If you look at Muslims, they are also following the hijab. They do it with their pleasure and not under any pressure."
Samreen, a student of mass communication, says about this decision, "Our courts know what kind of rights we have got from the constitution. If they take away our rights then anyway we are stopped in everything in a patriarchal society. So if we wear niqab and hijab niqab we can go and make way for us then we don't think you should stop that. We have to read, we are being held back anyway. Everything for us Why does it start?
It has been so many years since the country got independence, why haven't you come up with the issue of hijab yet, then why have you raised the issue of hijab now? Now women are taking their place in society, so you want to push them back again. And if she can come forward because of a hijab, then you should not have any objection to her. You should let them come wearing them."
Bushra, who is trying to get a job after completing a BA, believes that whatever women wear depends on the wishes of the women.
She says, "We are proud of the Constitution. Under Article 21, which we have got as a fundamental right, we have every right, whether it is the right to dress. Whatever we wear depends on our will. Is.
"Very few people in Muslim homes get the opportunity to pursue higher education. When it comes to higher education, people stop or do not go. Especially where there is coed education. Due to this hijab, Permission is given that let's go to study. So we feel that what we have right to education is also being violated. And if we remove the Muslim community, then like Punjabis then they wear a turban, who are Hindus. They are Brahmins, they keep the top behind, those who are called Pandits, then we should object to them too."
"We have studied in a Hindu school, we were told that you should pray, which we did, and we did not mind that we are Muslims, we will not pray, or if something religious is happening in that we Will not participate. When we can live like that by participating in any religion, then why do people have this objection? It means that girls are behind, and should be behind. Especially in a community Girls should be further behind. When she does not study then what will she move forward?"
What did the supporters of the hijab say in Rajasthan?
After the Hijab issue came to light in Karnataka, there were protests in Rajasthan and this matter was also raised in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. Now after the High Court's decision regarding Hijab, the reaction of leaders and Muslim organizations in Rajasthan has come to the fore.
BBC associate journalist Mohar Singh Meena took reactions from some people after the decision on hijab in Rajasthan.
Hina Khan, a BEd student from a private college in Sikar district, says, "Everyone has their religious traditions, similarly we have hijab in our religion. Hijab should not be banned."
At the same time, Yunus Chopdar, the founder president of the Muslim Council, has issued a statement saying, "The decision to dismiss the petitions filed against the ban on hijab is worrying. This decision is against the spirit of fundamental rights and constitutional values of pluralism. "
"The insensitivity of the court to the sentiments of Muslim women of the country for whom the hijab is an integral part of their faith and identity is astonishing. "
Along with this, Rajasthan Minorities Commission President and Adarsh Nagar MLA Rafiq Khan have said, "The decision of the court is paramount. But, hijab is not such a thing that should make any difference to education. There is no dress code in the college. Get your rights."
Simultaneously, the students' Federation of India (SFE) Sikar city president Sharfaraz Jatu has said in his statement, "The Karnataka High Court's hijab decision is contrary to the constitutional guarantee of equality. Repeal the hijab ban and unfavorable study environment in Karnataka." Make sure."
He has said, "The judiciary is not expected to uphold discriminatory policies. Wearing a scarf to cover the head has never been considered a violation of the uniform, an urgent need for justice from the Supreme Court."
BJP State Minority Morcha General Secretary Hameed Khan Mewati has justified the court's decision. He has said that the court's decision is respected and we accept it."
What are political parties called in Madhya Pradesh?
After the decision of the Karnataka High Court, BJP leader Pragya Thakur has given her reaction in Madhya Pradesh.
In Madhya Pradesh, BBC's Associate Journalist Shuraih Niazi has talked to BJP and Congress and tried to know their opinion on this decision.
Bhopal MP Pragya Thakur has called it a good decision and welcomed it.
Pragya Thakur said that when school-college go to get an education, then it is necessary to have discipline and equality. Religion and creed should not come in the middle of education.
He said that the court's decision is in the interest of the country which should be respected.
Congress MLA Arif Masood has said that he will go to the Supreme Court against this decision. However, he said that the full decision of the court has not been read.
Masood said, "The court's saying that hijab is not a mandatory part of Islam is not at all correct. Hijab is an essential part of Islam. He agreed that there should be a dress code in school-college but if someone wants to cover his head, then he should stop."
