There is still doubt about the playing of veteran teams like South Africa, Sri Lanka, and West Indies in the One Day World Cup to be held next year. 10 teams will play in this World Cup to be held in India in 2023. 7 have qualified and 3 places are left.
A team will qualify directly i.e. based on Super Leagues points. 2 teams will be entered through a qualification tournament. South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Ireland, Zimbabwe, and the Netherlands are the 6 teams in the race. In this too, Ireland is such that it can spoil the maths of direct qualification.
First of all, know how to enter based on Super Leagues points
Being the hosts, India has qualified directly. The fate of the remaining teams will be decided through the ICC Super League and World Cup qualification tournaments.
The ICC made the bilateral ODI series between the top 13 teams a part of the Super League from 30 July 2020 to 31 May 2022.
The team that wins the match is awarded 10 points. The losing team does not get any points. In case of match cancellation or tie, both teams are given 5-5 points.
At the end of the period of the Super League, the teams that remain in the top 8 will get direct entry into the World Cup.
Which teams have got direct entry
India, England, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan have qualified on a points basis. Based on matches, it is decided to stay in the top 7.
1. West Indies: Position currently at 8, but depending on the defeat of others
Based on the bilateral ODIs to be held till May, 1 more team will qualify directly. The rest of the teams will have to play a qualifier tournament, out of which 2 teams will reach the World Cup. West Indies is at number 8 in the Super League points table with 88 points. All their Super League matches have been completed. West Indies will qualify for the World Cup if they maintain their eighth position at the end of the league.
For this, he will have to pray that South Africa loses at least three of their remaining matches. At the same time, the teams of Sri Lanka and Ireland also lost 2-2 matches. If this does not happen, West Indies will not get direct entry into the World Cup and will have to play a qualifier tournament.
2. Sri Lanka: Will have to win the remaining 4 matches, after that Africa and Ireland also lose
Sri Lanka now has 67 points and is at number 10 in the Super League. Sri Lanka has yet to play 1 match against Afghanistan and 3 matches against New Zealand. If they win all four matches, they will have 107 points. Sri Lanka will be able to qualify only if South Africa loses at least one match.
Sri Lanka will have 97 points if they win 3 matches. In this situation, he will have to pray for 2 defeats of South Africa and one defeat of Ireland. On winning 2 matches, he will have 87 points and on winning one match, he will have 77 points. In such a situation, their points will be less than West Indies and the team will not be able to qualify directly.
3. South Africa: Must win all 5 matches, other teams also lose
South Africa is at number 11 with 59 points. The team has to play 3 matches against England and 2 against the Netherlands. If South Africa wins all 5 matches then it will have 109 points and the team will qualify directly.
If he wins 4 matches, he will have 99 points. In this situation, South Africa will have to pray for at least one defeat of Sri Lanka.
If he wins 3 matches, he will have 89 points. In such a situation, they will have to wait for 2 defeats of Sri Lanka and one defeat of Ireland.
The team will have 79 points on winning two matches and 69 points on winning one match. In such a situation, she will not be able to qualify directly and will have to play in the qualifier tournament.
4. Ireland: Can exclude big teams, direct entry is also possible
Ireland has 68 points from 21 matches. His 3 matches will be from Bangladesh. If they win all three matches, they will have 98 points. The team can directly reach the World Cup with this many points, provided South Africa loses at least two of their remaining matches and Sri Lanka's team loses 1 match.
Ireland will have 88 points with 2 wins and 78 points with 1 win. In such a situation, the team will not be able to qualify directly for the ODI World Cup.
Zimbabwe and Netherlands can't qualify directly based on Super League points. These teams will have to play qualifier tournament.
