Economically weak Sri Lanka may have become malaria-free, but malaria eradication in the country's capital Delhi is still a big challenge. Under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program (NVBDCP), it is claimed that there are no deaths due to malaria in Delhi, but the reality is beyond this.
Medically verified death registration figures show that the national capital still accounts for an average of 87 untimely deaths every year due to malaria. In which youth below 45 years of age are also included. In such a situation, it is necessary to question the program run for the prevention of malaria.
In Delhi, in October 2021, mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya, and malaria were included in the category of notified diseases. Under this, it is mandatory to inform the government nodal agency about every patient suffering from mosquito-borne diseases. So that a campaign can be run for the prevention of mosquitoes in the surrounding area.
Only one patient died of malaria in 5 years
Surprisingly, after the inclusion of mosquito-borne diseases in the category of notified disease, the number of malaria cases has reduced even less than before. According to the data of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Program and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, only one patient died of malaria in the five years between 2017 and 2021. Apart from this, last year also a patient died.
In this context, only two patients died of malaria in Delhi in six years. On the other hand, this claim is refuted by medically verified death registration data. According to the report of death registration, between the years 2017 and the year 2021, malaria disease became the cause of death of 436 people in Delhi. It is clear from this that there is a difference between the campaign run for the prevention of malaria and the ground reality.
