India has expressed deep disappointment over the non-extension of the ceasefire between the Yemen government and the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. India's Permanent Envoy to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj said that India expresses solidarity with the unity of Yemen and the people of the conflict-torn country.
Kamboj said this at the meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Yemen. The meeting took place on Thursday. Kamboj said it was very disappointing that no agreement was reached between the warring factions to extend the ceasefire. A ceasefire between Yemen's internationally recognized government and Iranian-backed Houthi rebels ended on 2 October.
India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ruchira Kamboj said that India was deeply disappointed to learn that the parties concerned did not agree to a further extension of the ceasefire. The only lasting solution to the conflict is peaceful dialogue and a political solution. This will fulfill the aspirations of the people of Yemen and bring prosperity.
Welcome to Yemen's government initiative
Kamboj said the Yemen government had implemented the ceasefire agreements with confidence. Welcoming the government's commitment, Kamboj said that it is time for the warring parties to adopt a human-centered approach and not just look at it as a military or political game.
Kamboj said that talks are on through the Special Envoy for a ceasefire. We hope to reach a satisfactory settlement soon. India has also appreciated the flexibility shown by the Yemeni government on the proposals made by the Special Envoy. It also urged the Houthi rebels to take a constructive approach to the settlement. Meanwhile, India has urged all parties to maintain peace and avoid provocative action or military action. There has already been a huge loss of life and property due to the conflict. Millions of people are suffering from food insecurity.
UN Secretary-General Guterres also appealed for a ceasefire
On the other hand, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has also appealed to the warring sides of Yemen not only to re-implement the ceasefire agreement but also to extend it. Guterres said in the past that the agreement played an important role in maintaining peace in the country after the civil war that started in Yemen in 2014.
Houthi rebels captured northern Yemen in 2014
In Yemen in 2014, Houthi rebels took control of the country's northern areas, including the capital Sanaa. After this, a fierce civil war started in the country. Due to this, the Yemen government was declared in exile. The Saudi-led coalition then began efforts to restore the internationally recognized government in Yemen in 2015.
more than half a million killed
More than 150,000 people were killed in the conflict in Yemen. Of these, 14,500 were civilians. After this, both sides agreed to a ceasefire agreement for two months with the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on April 2, mediated by the United Nations. After this, the period of the ceasefire agreement has been extended twice, but the extended period ended on October 2 this month.
