There is fierce protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) in Assam. The central government is being criticized a lot in the state. The All Assam Students Union (AASU) and 30 indigenous organizations on Monday burnt copies of the controversial law CAA in various parts of the state, including Guwahati, Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Dibrugarh and Tezpur. Apart from this, the United Opposition (UofA) of 16 parties in Assam has announced a statewide strike on Tuesday as part of a phased movement.
All Assam Students Union (AASU) has announced a massive demonstration in the state after the Central Government notified the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said that we have decided to burn copies of CAA in every district. On Tuesday, copies of the CAA will be burnt in all the state capitals of the region on behalf of the North East Students Organization (NESO).
The 16-party United Opposition Forum of Assam (UofA) also announced a statewide strike on Tuesday, besides launching other agitation programs in a phased manner. According to a senior police officer, security has been tightened across the state with the deployment of additional police personnel following the implementation of the Act.
All police stations kept on alert mode
All police stations in the state have been put on alert, while barricades have been installed on major routes in almost all towns where widespread protests had taken place during the passage of the Act in December 2019. AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya said, 'We will continue our non-violent, peaceful, democratic movement against the CAA. We will also continue our legal fight.
Samujjal Bhattacharya further said that copies of the CAA will be burnt in all the state capitals of the region by the North East Students Organization (NESO) on Tuesday. He said that we would also take out a torch procession in Assam and start Satyagraha from the next day.
Assam Police issued a notice
Here, the police have issued a notice to the political parties calling for a strike in Assam in protest against the CAA. “Action will be initiated against you and the total cost of damage to public and private properties will be recovered from you and your organization,” the notice said.
