In the case of Sushant Singh Rajput's death, the CBI has registered a case against six people including Riya, but in the last 11 months, nothing has been done by the CBI. No arrest was made, no charge sheet was even filed. The CBI is now probably looking to give a closure report. Even after being asked repeatedly, the CBI is not ready to officially tell anything in this case.
What happened in the CBI action
On August 19, the CBI got an order from the Supreme Court to proceed in the case. After that, a team of CBI had set up its court in DRDO guest house in Santacruz area of Mumbai and called all the accused one after the other for questioning here.
Riya was questioned for seven hours for three consecutive days from August 28. Riya was accompanied by her brother Shauvik, father Indrajit, and mother Sandhya Chakraborty, Sushant's friend Siddharth Pithani, house manager Samuel Miranda, staff members Dipesh Sawant and Keshav were interrogated. Mahesh Shetty and manager Shruti Modi were also questioned by Sushant's staff for hours.
The CBI team had recreated the entire crime scene at Sushant's house. The team also went to Cooper Hospital and questions and answers were also done to the team of doctors who did Sushant's post-mortem. Sushant and Rhea briefly stayed for three months at a resort near the Mumbai airport. The manager and all the staff of that resort were also questioned.
Track record of officers of the investigation team
CBI had formed a team to investigate this case. All its officers have played the responsibility of important posts and have handled many big cases.
Manoj Shashidhar is a 1994 batch officer of Gujarat cadre, he was ADG in Gujarat IB and has also been the Commissioner of Vadodara. He was sent to CBI only last year.
Gagandeep Gambhir is also from Gujarat cadre. Gagandeep, a 2004 batch officer, had earlier been the investigating officer in the Srijan scam and Hathras case. He has also investigated illegal mining cases, the AgustaWestland deal, and the Vijay Mallya case.
The third officer of the team, Nupur Prasad, is from the AGMUT cadre. Nupur, a 2007 batch officer, hails from Gaya in Bihar. Her husband IPS Surendra is currently working in FRRO.
CBI got new director 3 weeks ago
Rishi Kumar Shukla was the director when Sushant's case came to the CBI. His term is over. After him, Subodh Kumar Jaiswal took charge on May 25 last month. It is difficult to say how much priority the Sushant case is for the new director. Perhaps they can direct for immediate closure report in the case which is not progressing.
The spokesperson also new officer, said nothing is known
When new CBI spokesperson Ramesh Chandra Joshi was asked about the Sushant case by Dainik Bhaskar, he refused to share any information saying that he did not know anything. Joshi is an officer of the Indian Information Service and has been appointed as the spokesperson of the CBI just three months back.
CBI used again for political
Sushant died in Mumbai. Prima facie it was a suicide case. This meant that the case was to be handled by the Mumbai Police. On the other hand, Sushant's father had lodged an FIR against Riya Chakraborty and others in Patna. The investigation of this case was with the Bihar Police.
There is a coalition government of non-BJP parties in Maharashtra. There is a coalition government of BJP and Janata Dal-United in Bihar. As the assembly elections of Bihar were approaching, the matter took a political turn. Later this case was handed over to the CBI.
But by the time the Bihar assembly elections came, this matter had cooled down. The CBI investigation also slowed down during that time. Today neither the political parties need this case nor the CBI is taking any decisive step.
Drug angle uncovered by ED investigation
The Enforcement Directorate had also probed the money laundering angle in the Sushant case. But the ED has not found any such concrete evidence in its investigation.
Riya has embezzled Rs 15 crore from Sushant's bank accounts, it was alleged by Sushant's father.
Based on this, the Enforcement Directorate initiated an investigation into whether money laundering took place.
On 7 August, Riya Chakraborty was questioned by the ED.
Till now ED has not reached any concrete conclusion, but it is believed that ED has not found anything against Riya or her family.
The Enforcement Directorate scanned Riya's mobile phone, the drug angle was detected from the chat records on her, the ED informed the NCB about it.
