Heavy rain and flood threat in China
The huge power shortage in Chongqing's huge manufacturing center and surrounding areas of Sichuan province has led to heavy use of air-conditioning and a drop in reservoir levels. According to the information, the rain started in these parts on Sunday and is expected to increase till Tuesday. The Chinese government launched an emergency flood-fighting response in Sichuan and Chongqing at 6 p.m. local time.
National Drought Emergency was declared
Earlier this month, the government declared a National Drought Emergency. Several parts of southern China saw temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius over the past few weeks, widely considered the warmest period since the government began compiling information in 1961. It hasn't rained in Chongqing for nearly three weeks, and factories of major global companies have started to suffer power outages, slashing production.
Many cities are affected by extreme heat
In addition to drought, extreme heat also affected crops around many cities and areas. During this, pictures of dry lakes and dry rivers from China surfaced on social media. Chongqing and Sichuan have also suffered from forest fires. Torrential rains are forecast for Monday and Tuesday in the eastern and southwestern parts of the Sichuan Basin and western and northern Chongqing. In China, 66 other rivers, including the largest river Yangtze River, have dried up due to severe drought.
