Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on the telephone late Thursday night with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was targeted by the US and Western countries after a heavy attack on Ukraine late on Wednesday. PM Modi appealed to President Putin to immediately put an end to all forms of violence and find a solution to the current problem through diplomatic dialogue. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, the Prime Minister reiterated his old view that differences can be resolved only through honest and serious dialogue between Russia and NATO.

This dialogue between PM Modi and President Putin assumes special significance, as India is engaged in reconciling because of the increasing tension between its two major strategic partners - America and Russia. India's stand-in this entire episode has so far been indirectly supporting Russia.

On the other hand, the Indian government has become seriously active in cutting the immediate diplomatic and economic side effects of Russia's attack. Hours after the news of Russian troops entering several cities of Ukraine, the Foreign Ministry started a continuous review of the whole situation through a special cell. A long meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Modi late in the evening. It has been told by the government that during the talks, President Putin gave complete information about Ukraine to PM Modi. Modi told Putin that India believes that this problem can be resolved through serious and honest dialogue between Russia and NATO countries.

Modi appealed to all parties to immediately put an end to every incident of violence and start a serious diplomatic dialogue. He also apprised Putin of the security concerns regarding Indian students and citizens. Said that the biggest priority for India is to get its citizens out safely.

The two leaders agreed that liaison would be maintained between the officials of the two countries on matters of related common interest. It is also worth mentioning here that the telephone talks of Modi and Putin took place just hours after the Russian President meets with Pakistani PM Imran Khan. Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla told in a late-night press conference that the CCS meeting went on for a long time. India is trying its best to maintain constant contact with the parties involved in this entire dispute i.e. America, Russia, and the countries of the European Union.

The External Affairs Minister returned from a visit to Europe on Thursday morning and is constantly reviewing the situation. He has held talks with UK Foreign Minister Liz Truss and EU Foreign Affairs Representative Josep Fontelas, with the situation in Ukraine being discussed prominently. Late-night Jaishankar is also going to hold talks with the Foreign Minister of Ukraine.

India's next step will be entirely determined by what steps the NATO countries take after the Russian attack. India is the only country that has strategic partnerships with Russia, the US, and the European Union.

 

India has kept its neutral stand

 

So far, India has adopted the policy of indirectly supporting Russia even while remaining neutral, but experts believe that it will be difficult to do so in case of a war between America and Russia. When asked about this, Shringla replied that it will be seen when such a situation arises. India will also have to find a way out of the US and European countries' sanctions on Russia, as it is expected to have a very adverse effect on India's economic and military cooperation with Russia.
