US President Joe Biden said in an interview on Sunday that the US military would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. This is his clearest statement so far on the China-Taiwan issue. When asked in an interview whether the US military will defend Taiwan after China invades it? In response, Biden replied, Yes, of course.
US policy for Taiwan did not change
Commenting after Biden's statement, a White House spokesman said that US policy towards Taiwan has not changed. The spokesman said the president has said in the past that the United States will always stand by the defense of Taiwan.
Let us tell you that this interview with Biden taken by CBS was conducted last week. The US President has arrived in Britain today for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. The US has long stuck to a policy of not clarifying whether it will give a military response to the attack on Taiwan.
However, in his 60 Minutes interview, Biden reiterated that the United States did not support Taiwan's independence and remained committed to a one-China policy. The US has not officially recognized Taiwan as a country.
