Indian cricket team star Hardik Pandya has once again found himself embroiled in controversy. A complaint has been filed against him, alleging disrespect toward the national flag—the Tricolor—during the celebrations following India’s victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup. It is alleged that this incident has deeply hurt the sentiments of millions of citizens across the country.
Advocate Vishwapratap Singh Rana, a resident of Nagla Nandu village within the Hathras Gate police station area, has sent a written petition to the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Union Home Minister, demanding strict action against Hardik Pandya. The complaint states that following India’s victory in the final match of the 2026 T20 World Cup, a video featuring Hardik Pandya has gone viral on social media.
In this video, Pandya is allegedly depicted in a compromising situation with a woman while draped in the national flag. The advocate alleges that this act violates the dignity of the national flag and has offended the sentiments of millions of the country’s citizens.
Regarding this serious allegation, SP Chiranjeev Nath Sinha has stated that upon receipt of the complaint, a thorough investigation into the matter will be conducted, and appropriate legal action will be ensured in accordance with the law. The police administration is treating this matter with sensitivity, and no negligence of any kind will be tolerated.
Complaint Filed Against Hardik Pandya
Prior to this, Pune-based lawyer Wajid Khan Bidkar had also filed a complaint against Hardik. He submitted a written application to the police, appealing for an investigation into and action against the cricketer. According to the news agency ANI, this complaint was lodged at the Shivaji Nagar police station in Bengaluru; however, the news agency PTI has reported that the complaint was filed at the Shivaji Nagar police station in Pune. In connection with this matter, Wajid has demanded that the police register an FIR against Hardik.
Complaint Based on Social Media Video
According to the complaint, several videos of the players celebrating following India’s victory have gone viral on social media. In these videos, Pandya can be seen running across the field and dancing while draped in the Tricolor over his shoulders. The lawyer alleges that, in a video recorded during the celebrations, Pandya is seen lying on the stage with his girlfriend, while the Tricolor remained draped over his shoulder. The complainant asserts that such conduct constitutes a violation of the respect due to the National Flag.
Lawyer Cites the Law
Wajid Khan Bidkar stated that upholding the dignity of India’s National Flag is the responsibility of every citizen, and laws exist to ensure this. He noted that he has filed a complaint regarding this matter, specifically citing the laws pertaining to the National Flag.
Speaking to the news agency ANI, he said: "You must have watched the T20 World Cup. While celebrating his victory, Hardik Pandya was dancing with his girlfriend. The National Flag was tied behind him.
According to Section 2 of the 1971 National Flag Act, we are required to respect the dignity of the National Flag. However, Hardik Pandya became so engrossed in the victory celebrations that he was lying down with his girlfriend, and the National Flag remained on his body even at that moment. I believe this constitutes an insult to the National Flag."
