Thousands of fans gathered at the Chennai airport on Monday morning to welcome D Gukesh, who returned home after winning the World Chess Championship title from Singapore. Gukesh became only the second Indian to win the prestigious title after 18-year-old Viswanathan Anand. Officials of the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority (SDAT) and students of the famous Velammal Vidyalaya, the main hub of chess in the city, gave D. Gukesh a special welcome.

During this, Gukesh said, 'I am very happy to be here. I can see the support for me here and see what this title means to India. You people are amazing. You gave me a lot of energy.' As soon as Gukesh came out of the airport, he was garlanded and surrounded by thousands of fans. Fans were eager to get a glimpse of the new world chess champion. Officials of the All India Chess Federation were also present to congratulate the young champion.

In this celebration, students were holding banners to honor the young Indian Grandmaster. SDAT officials presented Gukesh with a shawl as a symbol of appreciation for his historic achievement. A specially designed car was deployed at the airport to take the world champion to his residence, carrying pictures of Gukesh and the tagline '18 at 18'. Gukesh has become the 18th undisputed world champion in square chess. He defeated China's Ding Liren in a 14-game world championship match in Singapore. Gukesh broke the record of the great Garry Kasparov to become the youngest world chess champion.
